During the Stone- Ages when I was born, books were viewed as entertaining and insightful and we, from that time, could actually retain and reproduce what we had learned from them. However, today with the technological rat-race, a ten year old can now own a tablet, a Black Berry, along with the internet, Cable T.V and video games to last him his whole life, leaving books on the back shelf. It is no wonder therefore, that education and the quality of education being received from institutions is being affected , according to Vilani Feiris on the UNICEF website (1999) “nearly one billion of the world's population is entering the twenty-first century without even the basic literacy skill of signing their names. Relatively few can operate a computer or comprehend a simple application form” an this was just in 1999, so imagine now, when concentration is being further affected by increased technological distractions. Children and teens alike, have allowed these luxuries become distractions and to tell the truth, they don’t have to be.
If it seems you are unable to concentrate on your school work, then use these valuable resources to help you instead of helping you to procrastinate. The internet is a body of information at your disposal, use it! If you know you have an assignment due and books take too much time to get to the point, then use the net to get a better understanding of what you’ve been reading, look up the book if you have to and get a synopsis. Easy, no? Moreover, Facebook is not just a social network; it is a network, first and foremost, which means connection to others. If you have group work for example, start a group on Facebook and do your group-work there! Overall, just use these things to your benefit instead of letting them affect your concentration.
Think about it, you’ll thank me later
