Unless you're a very sociable person who can make friends at the drop of a hat then going to a party without a date is not a good idea. Feeling lonely when you're surrounded by people who are seemingly having the time of their lives can not only be depressing but it can make you feel so uncomfortable you leave the party before an appropriate time. If you love drinking booze you might just end up staying by the alcoholic table and get drunk around a room filled with people you don't know and I need not tell you about the possible consequences of that, do I?
Tips for Survival
It's one of the worst things ever when you're in a room filled with people and you feel alone. This does nothing at all for your self-esteem and might just cause you to leave the party way early. If you don't have any luck with any of these tips stay for at least 45 minutes before leaving. If you can find the host give them a warm hug and thank them for inviting you. Let them know the party was nice (even if it wasn't for you) and tell them to enjoy the rest of their special evening.
To avoid being a loner at a party, when you get your invitation ask the host if any of your friends will be there, if the answer is no ask if you can bring a guest. Depending on the type of event it is it's OK to ask to bring a friend so ensure that you ask about the formality of the event before asking for the "Plus 1" card.

- Assess your surroundings. Do you see a familiar face? If you do, go over to the familiar face and make small talk. If they're around their own friends introduce yourself and try to be as friendly as you can be without appearing creepy or desperate. Listen to their conversation, hopefully they aren't gossiping, and give your point of view when you can. Always keep in mind - If you haven't anything good to say, keep your mouth shut.
- Put on your winning smile. If you're single either fresh out of a relationship or not, look around the room for guys or girls that spark your interest and get your flirty smile on. Whether you decide to do this as practice, yes, like maths you need to practice flirting, or if you're going in for something serious this is a cool way to spend your time at a party.
