Parents, you cannot live with them and you sure as hell cannot live without them until you are earning a steady income that can provide you with all/most of your necessities.
Back in my teenage years I used to think young adults who moved out of their parents home only did it for one reason, so they could have their boyfriend/girlfriend over anytime they wanted. But, as I have now come to realise that is not always the case. Living with your parents pass a certain age can be difficult, because some parents tend to see their offspring as the little babies who were unable to make decisions for them. And as young adults we want our parents to respect us, and accept the fact that we are responsible and are quite capable of functioning without their help.
If your parents are anything like mine, they will forget things that you have asked them to stop doing.
How to deal with overbearing parents:
1.Write a list of the most unpleasant things your parents are currently doing. These are things that upset you and cause you to have an emotional set back.
2. Set up a nice family meal, it can be breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner (I prefer dinner). Tell them that you want to show them your gratitude by preparing a lovely meal for them. This meal will represent your ability to provide for yourself and for others as well.
3. Ensure that you treat your parents like your guests of honour and after they've enjoyed your meal tell them that you need to speak to them about something that have been bothering you.
4. Only start talking when you have captured their complete attention. At this point tell them how much you love them and how thankful you are for their continued support and then get into what has been bothering you. Allow your parents to give their feedback.
5. Try to strike a compromise, as it is most times impossible to change someone's personality in an instant. Closing this compromise end with saying something nice to them again, and tell them to relax while you do the dishes.
Like babies gaining their first memory, your parents (while in good health) will retain their memory of these compromises. Do you still have problems with your parents? Tell us how you handle these problems below.
